Standing at the top of the rocky shoreline, I looked out at the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Maine, an iconic landmark I had longed to capture. I only had one morning to get the shot, as I was on my way to a weeklong filmmaker’s workshop further down the coast. On a whim, I had veered north to explore Acadia National Park and capture this famous lighthouse, hoping to seize a fleeting moment in the rising morning sun. The light was perfect—but I knew it could vanish at any moment, with clouds beginning to creep across the sky.
The path down to the shoreline was more treacherous than I expected. Navigating over rugged rocks and slippery patches, I carefully made my way to the edge where the Atlantic waves crashed against the coast. Every step required concentration as I clambered down, camera in hand, my gaze fixed on the vantage point below that would give me the best angle of the lighthouse. The sound of waves pounding against the rocks filled the air, punctuated by the cries of seagulls circling overhead.
The scents of the Maine coastline were intoxicating—a mix of salt from the ocean, the rich, earthy smell of the surrounding pine trees, and the faint, briny aroma of seaweed washed ashore. The fresh breeze carried a coolness that contrasted with the warm, golden light breaking through the morning clouds. But as I looked up, I noticed the clouds thickening, slowly creeping over the sun, threatening to cast the entire scene in shadow.
I set up my camera quickly, hoping to capture the lighthouse in the soft, warm glow of the early sun before it disappeared. The Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse stood proud and majestic on its rocky perch, surrounded by the rugged cliffs and evergreen trees of Acadia. I framed the shot to capture the way the light illuminated the golden rock formations below, adding a touch of warmth to the cold, stony cliffs.
My heart raced as I worked against time, adjusting my settings to ensure the details of the rocks, the texture of the lighthouse, and the vast, open ocean to the left were all in balance. Just as I started to click the shutter, a thin layer of clouds drifted in front of the sun. For a moment, I held my breath, hoping the sunlight would reappear.
And then, as if on cue, the clouds parted ever so slightly, and the sun broke through, casting a radiant glow over the scene. The rocks below the lighthouse gleamed in rich oranges and yellows, and the white of the lighthouse contrasted beautifully against the blue sky and the greens of the pine trees. It was the perfect moment.
I captured shot after shot, savoring the brief window of ideal lighting, fully aware that I might not get another chance. The wind carried the scent of pine and sea, filling me with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude for the beauty of this place.
When I finally reviewed the images on my camera, I knew I had gotten what I came for. Each frame held the essence of Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse—a symbol of Maine’s rugged coast, bathed in the fleeting, golden light of a perfect morning. The detour had been worth every step of the hazardous trek, every moment of worry over the shifting clouds. I packed up my gear with a feeling of satisfaction, knowing I had added a truly special shot to my collection.
As I climbed back up the rocky path, the clouds closed in, casting the lighthouse in shadow. But I knew I had captured its brilliance at its best. The memory of that morning, the sights, sounds, and scents of the Maine coast, would stay with me, a reminder of the beauty that rewards those who seek it with patience and a bit of daring.
